Flying Dog Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout

20130227:
I wrote something like "Oyster Stout. It has a bit of a chocolate taste to it."*

*I created the post, deleted my text message, had an old revision open in another tab, saved over my original post, and consequently lost my original note. This has happened a couple times before. I wish Blogger had a revision feature.

This light refreshing American style wheat beer is sure to delight. Brewed with a high percentage of malted wheat, this beer is true to character with a hazy unfiltered glow. The citrus flavors are complemented by a slice of lemon traditionally served on the side. This beer is great for any occasion.

Miller Lite

As far as I know, this is my first time drinking Miller Lite. My friends and I were at a karaoke place and I think that's all the place had.

Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre

20130211:
My friends and I are once again here at CVP (Charles Village Pub) after a night of rock climbing (20130211).

I wrote: "The beer smelt good, but when the chicken tenders came their smell completely overpowered the beer's smell. I can smell the hops. There's a creaminess to the taste. It's not terribly strong. It's nice and easy. The color is a dark, transparent red." 9:49PM ET

Raison D'Etre

Availability: Year Round
A deep mahogany, Belgian-style brown ale brewed with beet sugar, raisins and Belgian-style yeast.

We began brewing this one at our pub in 1996 (we began packaging and selling it sometime in 1998) as the answer to the question, "What beer should I enjoy with a wood-grilled steak?" Raison D'Etre fits the bill. It's as tasty and complex as a fine red wine.

In the Quick Sip Clip video below, Sam talks about Raison D'Etre inside the new cellars for our 600-bbl fermentation tanks. The cellars were designed specifically to allow sterile yeast management. The system also allows us to automatically dose the yeast into the fermentation tanks. At Dogfish, we use multiple strains of yeast for our different beers, so we are acutely aware of all that can go wrong when you don't love and protect the yeast.

Original Release Date: 03/1998
Food Pairing Recommendations: Steak, duck, game, wine-reduction sauces, blue cheese, goat cheese, ham, mussels
Glassware Recommendation: Goblet or Snifter
Tasting Notes: pit fruit, decadent, winey, raisiney, malty

Ommegang Hennepin

20130203:
Note that by now this beer is at least a year old.* However, at 7.7% ABV and bottle-conditioned, it has the potential to last at least a year and even age well. On the other hand, I didn't purposely try to age it, I just never had the opportunity to share it. I figured bringing it to the Super Bowl party would be a perfect time to share. Unfortunately, everybody was pretty much done with drinking by the time I opened it. Fortunately, I found that I could put the cork back into the bottle! Unfortunately, I still would have preferred sharing it.

(20130203)

I wrote: "The Hennepin might be closer to tasting bad. Hmmm... I don't know." 10:41PM ET

Just in case it had an adverse affect on the flavor, I will mention that I already had three other beers by that point: Samuel Adams White Christmas, Samuel Adams Holiday Porter, and Ommegang Three Philosophers.

*On 20131226, I determined that I bought this beer as part of a gift pack some time during November 2011. The gift pack also included a bottle of Gnomegang, a bottle of Three Philosophers, and an Ommegang cup.

[20130204]

20130204:
This beer has a nice easy smell. I think the carbonation has gone down since opening the bottle yesterday, but it still has a nice and easy taste. It has a citrus taste. I would guess that I had too many drinks yesterday to correctly observe this beer.

(20140111)

20140111:
After sharing a Delirium Noël, I opened a bottle of Ommegang Hennepin and shared it.

Unfortunately, its notes (like various other events taking place in January 2014) are missing. While uneventful, at least I've had a experience with the beer.

HEART AND RUSTIC GOLDEN ALE. FULL-BODIED, HOPPY AND CRISP.

HENNEPIN WAS MADE TO QUENCH YOUR THIRST FOR THE UNKNOWN.

(20140111)

BREWMASTER PHIL'S TASTING NOTES
This style is called Grisette, or farmhouse, and is considered to be in the domain of the Belgian Saisons. Hennepin is a delicious brew for all seasons. It is spicy and refreshing, and also has a high alcohol content to keep you warm throughout the winter months.

A moderately hoppy, farmhouse-style ale with a champagne-like effervescence, Hennepin has a crisp start followed by malt sweetness balanced with a firm bitterness. Hennepin has a bounty of great flavors: ginger, spice, orange and toasted grain. Pouring a bright golden color with a spicy-sweet balance of orange peel, sweet malt, hops and ginger, Hennepin makes way for a dry finish with a slight bite of ginger.

CHEF'S TASTING NOTES & RECIPES
As an accompaniment, it leans towards Asian culture, especially sushi. The ginger notes and the coriander pair sublimely with hamachi and salmon and a good dose of wasabi.

This picture more closely reflects the actual color of the beer. It also shows
the amount I poured down the drain. It's good, but it's also noon. (20130204)

Ommegang Three Philosophers

20130203:
This is my third beer while watching the Super HarBowl (Super Bowl XVII). Purchased a year ago,* I wasn't sure how well it had kept, though I knew beers with higher content of alcohol last longer and sometimes even improve in taste.

I wrote: "Wow. This Three Philosophers is so alcoholic tasting. At least it hasn't gone bad." 9:32PM ET.

*On 20131226, I determined that I bought this beer as part of a gift pack some time during November 2011. The pack also contained an Ommegang cup (seen being used above), a bottle of Hennepin, and a bottle of Gnomegang.

While I brought the big bottle (along with two others the same size) to share, most everybody else preferred drinking other beers or had their fill of drinking for the night. As such by the end of the evening, I surprised myself learning I could stick the cork back in. I then took what remained back home, along with my re-corked bottle of Hennepin and the untouched bottle of Gnomegang.

20130206:
Unimpressed with simply thinking the beer has a strong alcoholic content, I opened the bottle today to have another taste.

The first complication is that the beer is now nearly flat. On my first sip I seem to get a little coffee or chocolate taste, but just slightly and it didn't appear on any other sips. Afterwards, the sweeter alcoholic taste reappears. It's a similar taste I get whenever I had a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA.

20140827:
The Three Philosophers has a full smell. I detect a floral smell which I associate to complex Belgian ales. This beer has a great taste. There tastes as if there are lots of sugars and that they coat the mouth a bit. Josh says, "Why haven't we had this before? This is one of the best we've had [recently] - only second to ginger beer." 20140828 3:49AM PT

QUADRUPEL ALE

UNIQUE BLEND OF OMMEGANG QUADRUPLE ALE AND LIEFMANS KRIEK.

THREE PHILOSPHERS WAS MADE FOR CONTEMPLATION.

BREWMASTER PHIL'S TASTING NOTES:
Three Philosophers is a unique blend of a Belgian-style strong dark ale and Liefmans Kriek, an authentic cherry ale from Belgium. Cherry chestnut in color, it's opaque but not cloudy with full carbonation topped by a smooth, tan head. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, molasses and brown sugar, dark fruits, brandied raisins and chocolate, Three Philosophers has notable sweetness with low hop bitterness. The mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish.

The strength and complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify.

Samuel Adams Holiday Porter

20130203:
This beer is my second beer while watching the Super Bowl this year. I drank it before drinking some Ommegang Three Philosophers and after drinking a bottle of Samuel Adams White Christmas. I should note that I drank the beer from my Ommegang (tulip) glass.

Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.
