Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout

20140731:
Finally, I have the Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout. It was dark black and had no discernible smell. However, the taste felt thick and heavy sensation. The second sip of it tasted strong and was unappealing. 9:06PM PT

At the end of the flight, I found the w00tstout was the worst, the Dudes' Grandma's Pecan was third best, the AleSmith Horny Devil was second best, and the Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA was the best tasting beer. 9:47PM PT

Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA

20140731:
The Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA has a pale ale smell, but more like pine. I really enjoy the pale ale taste. There's no bitterness, and the taste is not too grassy. The taste has a nice balance. Overall, its a solid ale. It is orange in color. 9:06PM PT

Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA smells like it should, an IPA. Initially, it tastes a bit bitter, with some hints of alcohol. The second round of sips was a bit easier on the tongue, but still comes with a bitter aftertaste.

Red Bull and Vodka

20140729:
My friend and I were here at Hooters, and while he had to start sobering up for the drive home (we both already had a beer, a pickle back, and a SoCo & Lime), I was still good for one more: Red Bull and vodka.

As a side note, I once had a mixed drink that used both Red Bull and vodka on 20121204 and I once had a "Trash Can" which probably used the pair on 20120414. In any case, I thought it would be a good way to end the night.

Unfortunately, I wrote that the combination was "just okay."

On the plus side, our waitress Bailey was super friendly. 11:32PM PT

Deschutes Obsidian Stout

20140729:
While most of the beers available here at Hooters are run-of-the-mill brews, there were a few craft beer options.

The restaurant refers to their 12 oz beers as Girl Size Beers and their 22 oz beers as Man Size Beers. However, I was not deterred by their sexist naming tactics and ordered a 12 oz glass of Deschutes Obsidian Stout.

I wrote: "Obsidian Stout. I can smell a bit alchohol. The smell reminds me of Baileys Irish Cream. There was a nice thick head which stayed around for a while. Hmm. This beer has substance to it (thick and creamy), but in the end its just [sic]" 8:43PM PT*

*I'm not sure why my notes are incomplete, but if you feel disappointed, then you're in the same boat as me. While I don't remember my actual last impressions of the beer, the context clues suggest I ultimately thought it was just average tasting.

Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic 'Quadrupel' style of Belgium's best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excells because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. (10,0% ABV) Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It's a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Wittekerke is always served cold, but in taking your time to enjoy it, you will find more flowery and spring flavors towards the end of your glass. Wittekerke is a fictitious name for a typical Flemish town, like hundreds of villages in Flanders with a name ending on Kerke (church) or Kapelle (chapel). Witte means white in English, thus the translation of the name is White Church. The Bavik brewery has since a long time brewed its own authentic wit beer under the "Bavik Wit" label, but the brewery chose to change the name in cooperation with the producers of the Belgian sit-com "Wittekerke." The actors drink Wittekerke during the show.

Wittekerke is now the best selling wit beer in Belgium off-premise, and was voted several years in a row the best Belgian wit beer by Belgian beer connoisseurs.

20140716:
After going to Papermoon Diner, my friends and I eventually decided to go to De Kleine Duivel, a Belgian beer bar located in Hamden, Baltimore, MD. With a list of beers to chose from, my friends and I took our time deciding. While looking through the list, the bartender mentioned a porter which piqued my interest and I decided to give it a try.

I wrote: "This beer has a lovely, malty smell. Possibly woody? Possibly piney? In any case, I like the taste. It's either a light chocolate taste or a light porter taste. The beer also has a very easy mouthfeel." 10:15PM ET

I wrote: "Hmm. This beer has a light sourness in addition to the chocolate taste. In fact, the sourness overtakes the chocolate taste. Of course, its a tasty sourness. Maybe the Ichtegem's had an effect." 10:47PM ET

Blogging story: Since I was unfamiliar with the beer, I asked the bartender for the name in writing. Unfortunately, the name given to me was "Zwete" and a month later (20140827) I typed "Zwete" into Google search and was met with results unrelated to beer. Actually, I initially thought the paper said "Zuete" and was searching that for a while. In any case, trying to tweak my searches, I followed some false leads here and there. Eventually, I went to Untappd.com and began scrolling down the list of Check-in's for De Kleine Duivel. After several pages, I came upon an entry for Zwet.be:
Paul V. is drinking a Zwet.be by Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen at De Kleine Duivel. 17 Jul 14
Since the Zwet.be is a porter and the entry was made on July 14, I decided that I had successfully found the name of the beer I had ordered. Thanks "Paul V."!

Boulder Beer Killer Penguin Barleywine

20140711:
This beer is clear, dark red in color.

The smell of this beer reminds me of the stronger beers which I have had and/or beers that I've left around for a while.

Indeed, upon sipping the beer, I find that it tastes quite strong, even getting a little burning sensation on my tongue and a warm sensation in my nostrils.

This may be a combination of the beer having a 10% alcohol by volume and that I've been holding onto this beer for about half a year (the 2013 bottle is primarily meant for consumption during the most recent winter, December 2013 to March 2014.

Overall, I think I don't like how this beer turned out. Unfortunately, this opinion doesn't reflect how the beer might have tasted within the time frame of its release date.

Widmer Brothers Ginger Barrel Aged Brrrbon '13

20140705:
The smell of ginger is apparent right out of the bottle.

After pouring, the smell is more or less the same, but the beer smells more like ginger tea than actual ginger root.

Oh my gosh, disgusting: my first sip of the beer reminds me of the taste of traditional medicine and this links back to the smell. There was indeed a ginger smell, but with a hint of traditional medicine.

Repeatedly sniffing the beer, the smell seems to switch back and forth between a nice ginger smell and a more threatening traditional medicine smell.

Unfortunately, upon sipping the beer for a second time, the same horrific taste of traditional medicine is produced and I ponder what course of action to take. Giving the beer the benefit of the doubt, I fit the bottle cap back on and stuff it back in the fridge: perhaps I let the bottle warm up too much.

Meanwhile, my third sip with the glass I already poured was a slightly better experience. The taste of traditional medicine only popped in for a brief moment to say hello before vanishing away for a pleasant sweet aftertaste left on the tongue.

With a little hope, I mix a little orange juice in with the beer that remained in my glass. This certainly made the beer more bearable, but I was hoping the result would be amazing and the saving grace to an otherwise horrible experience.

As a remark, the beer may very well taste good and that my personal tasting may be a combination of waiting too long before opening the bottle (probably best around winter) and the fact that I know what traditional medicine tastes like. (In Vietnamese, traditional medicine is called "thuốc bắc.")

20140706:
Today I grabbed the bottle from the fridge, and gave it a swig, hoping that the beer would taste better if it were colder than it were yesterday. Indeed, the flavor was not as intense as it was yesterday and I would say it tasted better. However, I don't think it tasted good. In the beer's favor, I was able to imagine how I might feasibly enjoy it during the winter season.

Then, suddenly, it came to my mind that I had (Vietnamese) ginger candy and so I decided to have a piece followed by drinking some of the beer. Unfortunately, the candy is perfectly sweet and spicy, and this beer with ginger doesn't reflect the same ginger taste as the candy.

Thus, at this point, I was conflicted on whether I should struggle to finish the rest, or simply let it go. Returning to the bottle, I took one more swig and poured what remained of the beer into a glass for a picture.

I then planned to pour that amount down the drain, but thinking it would be a waste, I drank some of it and took some reactionary photos (no exaggeration). Leaving the glass and coming back some moments later, I managed to chug what was left and interestingly the taste didn't really hit until I finished what remained. When it did hit, it's bad taste came in bursts. Thus, the first picture I took after that final swig is a face which wouldn't indicate the beer tastes bad at all. However, several shots follow which show a rather unpleasant experience (slightly exaggerated).

In any case, I happily finished the bottle in two sittings, but had a rather unhappy experience overall. One shouldn't need to figure out ways to make a beer taste better. It should already taste good. While the beer's one saving grace would be that I had this beer in the summer instead of the winter, a quick glance at various beer reviews show an opinion similar to mine: "I love ginger, but this beer doesn't do it for me."

Stone Cali-Belgie IPA

20140714:
This beer has a wonderful floral smell. Unlike most other beers, whose scent will fade away rather quickly for me, I can continually take whiffs of this beer with little to no discernible drop in the strength of the smell. This, however, may have been from pouring a nice, thick head.

In any case, the beer has a very bitter taste at the start, and takes a while to fade away. Once the bitterness fades, the beer has a little sweetness to it and a rather dry mouthfeel. It does not, however, have the grassy taste of your average IPA.

On a different note, the beer does not taste strong; of course, that's typical of most Indian pale ales.

After one and a half cups of the beer and without any food in my system, I begin to feel the effects of the alcohol.

As I finish the last of what I have poured (about a glass and a half), I find that the sweetness tends to be accompanied by a bitterness which I do not enjoy.

With that being said, I am most definitely glad I tried this beer, and think that it is worthy of trying by lovers of beer.

This beer is indeed a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is simply delicious Stone IPA dressed up in new Belgian duds. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds unexpected layers of flavors and aroma, providing a deliciously funky overtone to the hoppy brightness you already know and love as Stone IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.
