Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel

20170930:
At The Masonry, while in the process of finishing a Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca, I got a glass of the Péché Mortel. 4:09PM PT

Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel - full glass

After I finished the Jolly Pumpkin, the head of the Péché Mortel had dissipated. It looked pitch black.

Oh my goodness, it had a wonderfully strong toasted smell.

It edged on having too strong a taste - falling short of being an aged bottle of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. of course, falling short of the 120 Minute IPA is good, because that would be too strong. Elaborating, the beer has the strong taste similar to the 120 Minute IPA, but was extremely smooth.

My next few sips had a more sour flavor profile and tasted more alcoholic as well. 4:14PM PT

This beer was absolutely amazing. Not only did it have a lot of flavor, but it was 9.5% alcohol by volume without being noticeably alcoholic in taste or smell! That was unbelievable.

Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel - glass near full, some lacing

I simply couldn't remember the last time I had such a beer; though if I were to guess, it would have been a stout or porter.* Stouts and porters are my favorite. 4:19PM PT

Remark: This beer had the second highest ABV on the list of beers available on tap and my first beer, the Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca, had the third highest.

This stout slowly continued to become warmer. As it warmed, it retained the same flavor as before, but the taste also became sharper. 4:43PM PT

In the end, it finished well. I valued its quality. 5:15PM PT

*I keep a separate sheet of ratings. Out of the 748 entries, I have ratings for 444 items. In any case, this beer will be the first to receive a 5 out of 5. Prior to this beer, two have received 4.9: Elevation Senorita (horchata/imperial porter) and the Lagunitas Aunt Sally (sour ale). The three beers rated at 4.8 are a Pumpkin Ale, a Stout, and a Porter.

Imperial Coffee Stout

A deep, dark and profound stout. Espresso coffee is infused during the brewing of Péché Mortel, resulting in an intense dark beer with roasted malt flavours enhanced by bitter coffee. The dry finish is long and persistent. Intended as a tasting experience, we invite you to enjoy this brew in moderation.

It was crafted at our Montreal location in October of 2001.

Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca

20170930:
This was the first beer I ordered while at The Masonry.

Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca - full glass

The beer had a yellow color and about half an inch of head. It had a tart smell, but strangely it did not have a tart taste. It was almost as if the beer's bitterness and flavors perfectly canceled any possible tartness flavor in the beer.

The flavor was flat. After a few more sips, the taste was suitable. It was a light banana taste.* 3:43PM PT

The beer had a dry mouthfeel. This observation was supported by the beer's description on the menu: "slightly tart and dry." 3:49PM PT

Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca - half glass, some lacing

While the beer wouldn't be worth drinking again, it was unique and ended with a decent taste. 4:09PM PT

*As of 20171221, after reading the description, my guess and experience would suggest that the "light banana" taste was coriander.**
**According to the website information, the beer does in fact contain coriander.

Urban Family Zested

20170929:
This beer had a slight sour smell. 9:50PM PT

Urban Family Zested - 5 oz glass, full

It had an oddly weird taste. There was something off about the taste. It tasted as if it had nutmeg, but also sour. This sour taste, however, is unlike the sour taste of a pumpkin beer; this was a strange sour taste.

This beer was very sour. 9:54PM PT

This beer was too sour. At least for a final beer.

Snowdrift Cider Cornice

~I'm not a beer. I'm a cider.~

20170929:
This third cider taster had a beige color, but lighter than the first one.

Snowdrift Cider Cornice - 5 oz glass, full

It smelled more like apple juice than the others. Perhaps my nose had adjusted.

The cider had a non-cider flavor. It's probably a flavor imparted by the brandy barrel. Regardless, it's positively delicious.

At this point, I'd be willing to pretend it tasted like grape juice. 9:11PM PT

Although the brandy one was good, when I returned to the Seattle Cider Pumpkin Spice, I decided that I liked it better. 9:21PM PT

After finishing the Washington Gold Cider, I returned to Snowdrift Cider Cornice and I had realized that it tasted like a champagne. I was, furthermore, going to remark that it was dry like champagne, but then I looked up from the glass and I saw it was classified as a dry cider.

Then again, I did jot down "Brandy Barrel Aged Dry Cider" in my phone, so it could have entered my subconcious mind. In any case, I ultimately liked the Pumpkin Spice best. 9:28PM PT

Barrel-Aged Cornice

In our region, winter winds whip layers of snow into majestic formations called cornices. They hang in a gravity-defying balance, ready to cascade at any moment into a rushing avalanche. We wanted to craft a cider to carry these traits… So we aged cider in oak barrels, knitting tannins and aromas into an avalanche of flavors. Notes of bourbon vanilla, fall fruit and toffee coalesce in this off-dry cider.

This cider's smooth complexity and luscious vanilla-toffee notes pair well with grilled meets, pulled pork, bacon-wrapped dates, as well as rich desserts. Alcohol 7.5% by volume.

Washington Gold Cider Original

~I'm not a beer. I'm a cider.~

20170929:
Unlike with the set of three beers, I decided to try the second cider (Washington Gold Cider) after tasting about half of the Seattle Cider Pumpkin Spice. I had some water to clean my palette.

Washington Gold Cider Original - 5 oz glass, full

This cider was clear, like water. It didn't have a sweet smell, but it was sweeter than the Pumpkin Spice.

I didn't detect it as being dry. 9:07PM PT

After drinking a quarter of the Pumpkin Spice, I finished this cider and in a way I liked it better because it was sweeter. However, I was sure that I liked the Pumpkin Spice more. 9:25PM PT

Seattle Cider Pumpkin Spice

~I'm not a beer. I'm a cider.~

20170929:
Before I got a chance to smell the beer, I tasted it and it had a strong pumpkin flavor. It was awesome, I never had a pumpkin cider before. It had a cleaner taste than a pumpkin ale.

Seattle Cider Pumpkin Spice - 5 oz glass, full

Having tasted the cider already, I was unable to smell it.

It had the best of both worlds: the sweetness and taste of apple cider with the taste of pumpkin. 9:03PM PT

After drinking half of this taster, I went on to try the Washington Gold Cider.

Although the Snowdrift Cider Cornice was good, when I cycled back to this one, the Pumpkin Spice, I liked it better. Wishing to prolong the experience, I drank half of what was left (to leave a quarter of the original pour). 9:21PM PT

Skookum Mocha Perked

20170929:
Before I looked at the ABV, I smelled the beer's alcoholic fumes; it's 7.4% ABV. By now the small amount of head had dissipated. The beer had a pitch black appearance.

Skookum Mocha Perked - full 5 oz glass

The texture was watery, a stark contrast with the porter I had earlier this afternoon. I then wondered if coffee stouts are necessarily more watery.

Regardless I didn't detect any coffee notes on the nose and I didn't taste any either. With that being said, I don't know what most coffee tastes like when I taste it.

Skookum Mocha Perked - half full 5 oz glass

After about halfway through, smelling the beer several times revealed no alcoholic fumes and no malt smell either. Perhaps the smell of this beer is what light coffee smells like.

With respect to the taste, it had a light sourness. 8:39PM PT

The following sips weren't as impressive as the first. This pumpkin ale wasn't sweet and didn't have an obvious pumpkin taste.

The beer had a cloudy, orange appearance. It had a sour smell.

Snoqualmie Falls Steam Train Porter

I had trouble describing the taste of this porter. I supposed the onions of the coleslaw I was eating gave the beer a spicy taste which had reminded me of a chile porter. Maybe the beer had some chocolate notes.

Elysian Space Dust IPA

20170921:
Today Ada and I went to eat at a restaurant called Pedro's and I was considering to order a beer. And since the menu only specified the beer as Elysian IPA, I inquired on the beer's full brand with the waitress. Although she didn't know on the spot, she went to find out and came back with half an answer. Fortunately, I had looked up the possibilities and was able to make sense of what she said: "Space Dust."

Elysian Space Dust IPA - just arrived.

In any case, it was aromatic and had a hoppy smell. The taste matched the smell.

There was some bitterness throughout the sip and every sip ended with a lingering bitterness. However, the flavor was worth the bitterness. With that being said, perhaps I've grown accustomed to the (bitterness) flavor of an IPA. 6:48PM PT

Overall, this beer was good.

Elysian Space Dust IPA - all gone

While I would drink it again, given the choice between the Elysian Space Dust IPA and a beer similar to the Elysian Peste Chocolate Chili Ale,* I would choose the latter. In general, there are more complex and more balanced beers than this one. 7:46PM PT

*I say "beer similar to" because the Peste Chocolate Chili Ale itself was a limited release.

Remark: My notes indicated "Barley Melon" but Google showed "Briney Melon." So I had to figure out where I was in Texas. In my head the restaurant we went to was named Marlow, so I started my search with "Marlow," but I had no luck. As such, I Googled for bar areas in Texas and recognized "Deep Ellum, Dallas, TX." Looking at Google Maps, I recognized a place we walked past while looking for places to eat (Serious Pizza). Scrolling around I first recognized The Nines - which I knew was right across from the place I was looking for - and then I saw Harlowe MXM - which was where I ordered the drink. Sure enough, I confirmed they had "Briney Melon" on tap.
