Lowlander Winter Ale

20180422:
Note - Received @ 2:50 PM PT: (for Amsterdam, Netherlands +9 hours)
This beer has a great smell. Ada says it smells like BBQ sauce. I suppose it does. Hmm, I get a warm finish with every sip. It definitely has a cinnamon finish. There's also a lingering taste of nutmeg. I might be detecting the clove, since I was reminded a little of chai tea - though I thought the dominant flavor in chai tea was cardamom. In any case, this beer has a great taste.

LOWLANDER BEER
WINTER ALE
BREWED WITH CINNAMON, GINGER, NUTMEG AND CLOVE
RICHLY SWEET, SMOOTH WITH A HOPPY BITE & WARMING SPECULAAS SPICE FINISH

STORY
The story of Dutch speculaas cookies began in the ‘spice’ islands – once the only source of exotic ingredients like nutmeg. Back in Amsterdam, then the centre of spice trade, bakers created secret mixes using clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger to make luxurious cookies known as speculaas.

Due to the high costs of spices speculaas was often only baked in the winter and given as a gift. The gift giving winter tradition of the Lowlanders has continued to this date, as they start giving their loved ones initials in speculaas, chocolate letters – or now in bottles of spiced Winter Ale.

INSPIRATION
Inspired by the bakers who experimented making spice mixes, we have given warming Winter Ale a botanical twist. Our spiced American brown ale has been dusted with our own secret speculaas mix containing, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger, to name a few (but not all – there’s a reason this recipe tastes so good – the rest is a secret).

BREWED WITH
Cinnamon
The pale dried cinnamon bark once brewed in our ale creates a sweet and light woody flavour that gives our ale that typical speculaas taste.

Nutmeg
Original brought back to the western world by the Dutch nutmeg adds a festive pungent and complex lingering spice note to our Winter Ale.

Clove
Native to the Moluccan islands – a group of islands in Indonesia also known as the spice islands – these buds give a strong aromatic scent, a slightly sweet taste and produce a pleasant warming sensation.

Ginger
This fiery knobby root – one of the worlds oldest spices – adds a rich, rounded warming sensation to our Winter Ale beer.

't IJ IJndejaars

20180421:
I had the beer placed in the hotel freezer (starting at room temperature) from 10:38 PM (local time) to 11:14 PM (local time). It was cold, carbonated, and didn't have much flavor. There was some hoppiness and a mildly sticky, sugary mouthfeel. It was neutral in flavor. It was so easy to drink that I drank about half in just three sips.

The next sip had more of a wheat and/or ale taste with hints of fruit.

I had no idea what it was supposed to taste like, because I couldn't read the description on the bottle. Actually, taking a closer look, the bottle says "winterbier," but I didn't detect any herbs or spices.

Focusing more on the beer, I supposed it did taste as if it had spices. 2:22 PM PT (for Amsterdam, Netherlands +9 hours)

Similar to the beer I had the other day by the same brewery, 't IJ Zatte, this beer had a wheat and/or flowery taste. Perhaps the two beers use a common yeast or hop.

When I took a final sip, I tasted a flavor which I didn't like. I had tried to think of when I had previously tasted a similar flavor.

Perhaps I didn't enjoy the beer because it lacked a citrus taste. I enjoy wheat beers with a citrus taste. It is possible that Blue Moon (without an orange slice) tastes like this beer. 3:45 PM PT (for Amsterdam, Netherlands +9 hours)

IJNDEJAARS

Alcoholpercentage: 9%
Drinktemperatuur: 10-12 graden

One of our flagship beers, which is slightly different in flavour every year. A splendid, maroon-coloured beer with fine aromas of spiced fruit, orange peel and well-roasted malt to delight the nose. The flavour is a spicy balance of caramel, citrus and slightly bitter hops to restore that warm feeling during the dark days of winter. If stored in a cool, dark place, IJndejaars will keep for years (if you can stop yourself from drinking it).

Alcohol percentage: 9%
Drinking temperature: 10-12 degrees Celsius

Gurkha

20180421:
While at a Nepalese & Tibetan restaurant named Sherpa in Amsterdam, I ordered this beer.*

It was carbonated and didn't have much taste (so neither did it have bad taste). It was decent for a lager. 11:39 AM PT (for Amsterdam, Netherlands +9 hours)

Important: I thought it was a Nepalese beer, but upon writing this post, I learned that Gurkha is brewed in the UK. The restaurant menu misleadingly writes "Nepali Gurkha."

I ordered the medium (30cl) for 4.75 euros. The beer smelled like a lager but had a light, almost citrus taste. I liked it.

Note #2 - Received @ 5:30 AM PT (for Amsterdam, Netherlands +9 hours):
There's information (written in Dutch) on the table which has the word witbier in the text.*

*While writing this blog post, I found that BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com classify it as a dunkelweizen. Furthermore, I realized it's because the description read "donker witbier" meaning "dark white beer." Meahwhile, "dunkelweizen" literally reads "dark wheat" in German.

skuumkoppe: karaktervol donker witbier

formaten
Texels Skuumkoppe is verkrijgbaar in 30 cl flesjes, 75 cl fles en 1,5 l magnumfles.

It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger blonde beers crafted in the Belgian tradition, and Zatte more than lives up to expectations. It’s a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. A delicious classic to be enjoyed in all seasons.

Remark: I learned while writing this post that Amstel Lager isn't available in the USA - only Amstel Light. From what I gather, this is because Amstel is owned by Heineken, and Heineken decided not to sell both Heineken Lager and Amstel Lager in a single market. Interestingly, Heineken introduced Heineken Light to the United States market in 2005.

Another Remark: Amstel is the name of a river in Amsterdam. Actually, Amsterdam is also named after the river: Amstelredamme -> Amsteldam -> Amsterdam.

Master The Surge Pour
To enjoy this beer to the fullest, you want to master the surge pour. Just invert the can three times, then pour hard into the glass. This way, you can experience the “theater of the pour” with a brilliant cascading effect and a creamy foam that makes drinking Nitro Merlin Milk Stout all the more delicious.

Nitro Wizardry
The wizardry comes via “nitro,” the brewing nickname for nitrogen gas. A nitro beer contains more nitrogen gas and less carbon dioxide (CO2) gas compared to a traditional beer. The signatures of nitro beers are brilliant clarity in the glass; thick, long-lasting foam; and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel—all qualities that accentuate and enhance the classic milk stout character.

An honest to goodness India Pale Ale brewed with a bevy of real citrus

ABV: 7.5 | IBU: 45
RELEASE: February - December
ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 2016
STYLE: India Pale Ale

Front Left

Crafting delicious beer doesn’t start with ingredients. It starts with exploration. Back in the 90s, our constant need to experiment with culinary ingredients was considered heresy by some. But it was the passion and the constant trial and error that led to pure alchemy, and we began brewing with real fruit pulled from our brewpub kitchen. Made with sweet apricots, Aprihop blazed the trail as one of the first fruit-infused IPAs.

That ongoing journey continues today with Flesh & Blood IPA. We could save time and money by brewing with fruit extracts. But for us, authenticity counts. And when we say we brew with real fruit, we mean it.

Brewed with mouth-puckering lemon flesh, sweet orange peel and blood orange juice, Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive zesty fruitiness and subtle drying tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.
