Fin City Captain Jack's Pumpkin Ale

20131123:
Special draft at Charles Village Pub (CVP).

I wrote: "This beer smells like a lightly spiced pumpkin pie. The first taste is more creamy, like a stout, perhaps due to the layer of head. The second taste is less interesting, being mostly fizzy with a light spice flavor. Overall, the beer hardly tastes like pumpkin, but its drinkable and refreshing. I personally enjoy the pumpkin ales with a strong pumpkin flavor more than those with just a hint of Fall/Winter spices."

Ommegang Gnomegang

20131116:
I wrote: "This beer initially tasted bitter and afterwards the bitterness would come and go. In any case, it's mostly tasty, despite being about two years old." 10:12 PM

On 20131226, I double-checked my claim that the beer is about two years old. To begin, I acquired the bottle when I purchased a gift pack containing this bottle of beer, a bottle of Hennepin, a bottle of Three Philosophers, and an Ommegang cup. I checked my photo record and the oldest picture of the cup being used was taken on 20111201. I also remembered that I bought the gift pack after moving into my new apartment. Finally, being a gift pack, it would have been available to buy in November at the earliest. In conclusion, I would safely assume that I bought the gift pack in November 2011.

GNOMEGANG

The cheerful gnomes of Belgian farmstead Brasserie d 'Achouffe dropped by the Brewery Ommegang farmstead brewery in the summer of 2010.

In appearance, Gnomegang is a rich, translucent gold, with a big, fluffy white head. The high-carbonation is readily apparent. The nose focuses on distinctive clove aromas, combined with yeasty fruitiness typical of Chouffe beers. Flavors include ripe fruit, clove, light caramel, non-cloying candy sweetness, smooth maltiness, and well-balanced hopping. Mouthfeel offers a big, round body with full, fine carbonation. The finish is dry and warming, lingering gracefully.

A classic Belgian favorite. Black currants have been used for centuries as an ingredient in beers and liqours in Belgium and Northern Europe.

Taste: Deep reddish-purple color with exceptional aroma, flavor, and complexity. Fuller bodied and soft, while still being refreshing and crisp.

Serving suggestions: Venison, roasted pork tenderloin with rosemary cream sauce, scones, New York style cheesecake, and fresh fruit.

Serve cold at 2-3 degrees Celsius.

Appalachian Jolly Scot Scottish Ale

20131114:
Today I tried the current special draft here at Charles Village Pub (CVP).

I wrote: "[The ale] has a nice malty smell. The taste mostly matches the smell and reminds me of a brown ale. Wait, I guess its not as malty as a brown ale. I suppose it has a slightly toasted flavor. Then the taste eases off quickly. It's not so good after the initial three or four sips." 9:06 PM
I also wrote: "The beer is actually best sipped slowly, letting the taste fade in between sips. Its also quite sweet, almost fruity. The sweetness reminds me of complex beers that often have more alcoholic content. Overall, its a solid drink." 10:17 PM

Originally noting that the beer was called "Scott's Scotch Ale," I was unable to find the beer via Google search. This was a bit upsetting, as I recall double-checking the name of the beer with the server at least twice. Preferring not to publish a blog entry entitled "Unknown Scotch Ale," I called the bar (20131226) and inquired about a special draft I thought was called Scott's Scotch Ale. The person at the other end of the line said she remembered a beer by a similar name by Appalachian Brewing. That, however, was all the information she could give me. After getting off the phone, I did a new search and figured that Appalachian Brewing had a beer named Jolly Scot Scottish Ale. Not only was the name similar to Scott's Scotch Ale, but the color (amber) and flavor profile (malty and sweet) also matched.

Website Information:
Brooklyn Pilsner is a refreshing golden lager beer, brewed in the style favored by New York’s pre-prohibition brewers. In the 1840’s, the pilsner style emerged from central Europe to become the world’s most popular style of beer. Like its ancestors, Brooklyn Pilsner is traditionally brewed from the finest German two-row barley malts. German-grown Perle and Hallertauer hops provide a crisp, snappy bitterness and fresh, floral aroma. The flavor of the malt comes through in the finish. We ferment Brooklyn Pilsner at cool temperatures, and then give it a long, gentle maturation (lagering), which results in a beer of superior complexity and smoothness. We believe that you will find there to be none finer. Unlike mass-marketed so-called pilsners, Brooklyn Pilsner does not contain cheap fillers such as corn or rice, nor does it contain any preservatives or stabilizers. Brooklyn Pilsner is the real thing.

Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

Since introducing the world to the continuous-hopping method with our 90 Minute IPA, we've since released the continuously hopped 60 Minute IPA, 120 Minute IPA and even a 75 Minute IPA (a cask-conditioned blend of 60 and 90 Minute IPAs).

In addition to the continuous hopping, 90 Minute IPA is also dry hopped with our 'Me So Hoppy' device during conditioning.

The Wise ESB was the first beer we brewed, back in April of 1996; it was soon followed by Dragonstooth Stout, the Immortal IPA, Zephyrus Pilsner and Perseus Porter. Along with the Avatar Jasmine IPA, which has been with us since 2005, these beers constitute the core of our lineup. They have changed a bit over time, as new hop varieties have arisen and new ideas have struck us.

Night Owl Pumpkin Ale is our most popular seasonal offering. It began its life in the tiny Gameworks brewery we operated from 1997 to 2002, but soon outgrew even our Capitol Hill brewery. Night Owl and the rest of our seasonals – Bete Blanche, our deceptive and delicious spring Tripel, Loser, our substantial summer ale, and Bifrost Winter Ale – are now brewed at our production brewery in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood.

I recall buying this bottle of beer about two or three years ago, around the same time I bought several bottles of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. Fortunately, I was able to spot the beer being drunk* before it was all finished and was able to get a taste for my blog.

Black & Blue is a Belgian-style golden ale fermented with black raspberries and blueberries. Because we dose Black & Blue with real berries -- rather than artificial flavoring -- the fruit comes through in the flavor, not just the aroma.

The pureed berries are added as the beer leaves the brewhouse. In fermentation, the yeast -- the same one we use in Red & White and Pangaea -- feeds on sugars from the barley and the berries, giving Black & Blue a unique complexity.

The label art for Black & Blue comes from portrait painter David Larned. David and his wife Sarah (also a painter, Sarah painted the still life for our Red & White label) are big Dogfish fans and live with their pug Weezie in Pennsylvania. David honed his craft in Florence, Italy, and at the University of Pennsylvania. David has had exhibits across the United States, but primarily works with portrait subjects on commissions in his studio.

For more on Black & Blue, check out our Quick Sip Clip featuring Sam Calagione in the high-gravity cellars of our Milton, Del., brewery. In the video, Sam explains a little bit about the beers we ferment in this area of the brewery. He also talks about how the fruit we use in the Black & Blue affects the taste of this beer. Enjoy and Cheers!

DESCRIPTION
A refreshing unfiltered American style wheat beer, this medium-bodied ale has a delicate hop character.

TASTING NOTES
Pleasantly yeasty with malty influences. Notes of orange and lemon. Slight spiciness and floral quality. Lingering citrusy finish. Golden Spike Hefeweizen pairs well with citrus flavors; also with seafood such as mussels and clams. Also try it with cheeses such as feta, gruyere, and goat cheese.

STORY
Golden Spike Hefeweizen was named in honor of the celebrated historic completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. In May 1869 a ceremonial "golden spike" was used at the juncture of two facing locomotives--the Union Pacific No. 119 and Central Pacific No. 60 (better known as the Jupiter). Each locomotive represented the railroad lines laid from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The copper-alloyed gold spike was tapped into a pre-drilled hole and replaced by an ordinary spike soon afterwards. Each of the four sides of the golden spike was engraved, including one inscription that said, "May God continue the unity of our Country, as this Railroad united the two great Oceans of the world."

Its unique piney and grapefruit aromas from the use of whole-cone American hops have fascinated beer drinkers for decades and made this beer a classic, yet it remains new, complex and surprising to thousands of beer drinkers every day. It is—as it always has been—all natural, bottle conditioned and refreshingly bold.

Perfect Patron Margarita

20130815:
As far as I can remember, this is my first time at a Joe's Crab Shack. I did not, however, participate in getting crab.

To drink I had the "Perfect Patron Margarita." I wrote: "This is real easy to drink. It's a good blend. Overall, it's pretty delicious." 7:36PM ET

I got the following recipe from a photo posted on pinterest:
Perfect Patron Margarita
2 parts PATRON SILVER
1 part PATRON CITRONGE
sweet & sour

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and shake vigorously. Pour mixture over ice in a glass with a salted rim.

I got the following measurements from a "Joe's Crab Shack cocktails Flash Cards" on Quizlet.com:
1.5 oz Patron Silver
0.75 Patron Citronge
5 oz Sour

Goose Island Honker's Ale

20130814:
I wrote the following: "This Goose Island Honker's Ale didn't have much of a smell. On the first few sips, it has quite a carbonated mouthfeel. It has a good taste, but hard to describe. It's not grassy. I found it felt more watery as time passed. Overall, I would say its a tastier likeness of Yuengling." 8:58PM ET

ANCHOR CALIFORNIA LAGER®

California's first genuine lager reborn.

Anchor Steam's® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California's first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer.

Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage.

The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl's bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California's modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing's historic lager label—is heading east.

Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

20130723:
This beer had a nice smell to it. The taste was sweet and not as strong as I would expect of an India pale ale. Unfortunately, most of my notes occurred when the beer was warm. It sort of had an alcoholic taste at the end of each sip. Actually, it's confusing because I had two bottles of it. And both the more finished warmer one and the less finished colder one tasted about the same. It's a nice floral/grassy taste that matches the nose.

Plenty of IPAs will promise you the moon and the stars, looking to seduce you with words of smashing bitterness and hops everlasting. Actually, we're not here to "blow you away with a lupulin cannon," or "peel the enamel off your teeth." East IPA is a clean, drinkable IPA that's packed with flavor and offers a bold balance, not a smack in the head. American hops soar in the bright piney aroma, while East Kent Goldings hops bring the taste of stone fruits and firm bitterness from IPA's ancestral British home. Give our East IPA a try with some rich crab cakes or salmon, strike up a conversation with farmhouse cheddars, and find harmony alongside spicy dishes. East IPA's blend of tradition and exuberance sets the standard for hop-driven deliciousness.

ERDINGER Urweisse – in good old Bavarian tradition
A cause for celebration among weissbier fans!

A particularly strong, spicy aroma, a distinctive yeast flavor and an unmistakable top-fermenting beer profile - these are the characteristics of ERDINGER's new family member in good old Bavarian tradition. The recipe for Urweisse dates back to the brewery's founding days over 120 years ago. It owes its distinctive, traditional weissbier flavor to a special malt, a different hop variety and a special yeast.

And as appearance is just as important, Urweisse has been given its own special look - which will especially please all friends of the "good old Bavarian tradition". The label features the historic "Beautiful Tower" of Erding. The Euro bottle and original glass awake memories of days gone by. The new crate is also particularly eye-catching with its historic wooden look and "scorched" lettering.

Best is to simply taste it for yourself! ERDINGER Urweisse is available in Bavaria from January 1, 2008 and from February 1 in Baden-Württemberg. Presentation cartons are available in the ERDINGER Fan Shop from January onward.

Scheffels Maibock

20130522:
I wrote the following notes:
"Scheffel's Bier der Jahreszeit* is nice and sweet. It has a nice deep smell. It's similar to the Dark Krombacher I had at lunch."
"The accumulation of all the beers leaves a sweet aftertaste in the mouth."
"I like the Bier der Jahreszeit. It's good."**

*"Bier der Jahreszeit" means "Beer of the Season"
**The original said "real solid" instead of "good."*** However, I've come to avoid using the slang word "solid"; it would be especially important to avoid its use when it comes to beverages (where a reader may be misunderstand the statement as one declaring the beverage's state of matter).
***Looking into the use of "real" here, I learned via a response on StackExchange that 'real' may be used as an adverb in spoken English. The response cited the Longman Dictionary of Contempary English.

Scheffels Maibock*
*I suspect the Bier der Jahreszeit (Beer of the Season) was a Maibock. My suspicion stems from a reviewer on RateBeer.com saying he/she had the beer on tap at Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg with a timestamp of 20130518.

Website Information:
Maibock – helles, vollmundiges Starkbier

Translation:
Maibock - light, full-bodied strong beer
Wort 16.8% / 6.7% ABV / bottom fermented

In contrast to Christmas or Fast Bock the Maibock is a light strong beer. Earlier, when there were no refrigeration systems, beer was only brewed during the cold season with bottom-fermenting yeast (fermentation at 6-9°C). During the summer, the brewer needed to work with top fermenting yeast at 18-25°C. The Maibock was therefore the last pale ale that was brewed in the year. And since it was stored in April/May, it was always brewed a little stronger.

For Bockbier, the requirement is that it must have at least 16 percent wort. Since only about 80 percent of the wort is fermented, Bockbier, besides containing more alcohol, also has more residual sugar. The residual sugar causes a fairly sweet, full-bodied Antrunk. To round out this harmonious sweetness, we always give even more hops to it. This creates a strong, bitter taste in the finish result.

Translation:

Scheffel's Kräusen is a bright, bottom-fermented beer with a delicate hop flavor and pleasant bitterness. There will be four to six weeks stored and is unfiltered. A classic fresh "Light", which is the most popular among our beers with over 60 percent share of production.

Tips from our brewmaster: If you like your beer a little less carbonated, the beer should be served in a beer stein. Beer steins have a rough surface. Thus, the bubbled beer is less and it stays cool longer. For those who prefer their beer crisp, just drink it from a glass.

Fuller's London Pride

20130517:
I'm here in London with my family (parents and sister) and the bus has dropped us off near the London Eye. Hungry, we pop our heads into The Slug and Lettuce where the meals are 50% off on Mondays. To accompany my meal, I order a London Pride. Having enjoyed a bottle of Fuller's London Porter several years ago, I looked forward to the London Pride.

Of the beer, I wrote: "London Pride. Watery, but it has a taste. Light and drinkable. It's a subtle taste. I think there would be a time when I wouldn't enjoy such a watery beer."

I should start by noting the only other beer that I can think of off the top of my head, which I think of as watery, is a Guinness Stout. I don't, however, use watery to imply tastelessness, but rather the feeling of the liquid in my mouth. I suppose related descriptors are "thin" and "creamy."

[20130714]

20130601:
I wrote: "I like the London Pride more today than I did the last time we were in London. It tasted a bit sweeter. In fact, it just had more of a taste to it today it did two weeks ago. It is reasonably enjoyable. 4.75 pounds. 500 mL."

What I didn't take into account when writing my impression was that this London Pride was from a bottle and the London Pride from two weeks ago was from the tap.

Tasting Notes:
Fuller’s London Pride is an award-winning classic. A rich, smooth and wonderfully balanced beer, its distinctive malty base is complemented by well developed hop character, from adding Target, Challenger and Northdown varieties to the brew.

Described by leading beer writer Roger Protz as “an astonishingly complex ale for its strength”, its flavour has been likened by Stephen Cox, beer writer and former campaigns director at CAMRA, to “the sensation of angels dancing on the tongue...”!

In the UK, draught London Pride is brewed to 4.1% ABV (cask and keg), while in bottles and cans it has a strength of 4.7% ABV, making it an ideal session-strength premium ale. In most of our overseas markets, a keg version at 4.7% ABV is available.

London Pride has twice been awarded Champion Best Bitter at the CAMRA Great British Beer Festival in 1979 and 1995, and achieved the ultimate accolade of Champion Beer of Britain in 1979. It has won a host of awards around the world, including being crowned Supreme Champion at the 2000 International Beer and Cider competition.
