Oskar Blues Old Chub

They call it a Scotch Ale. It has a chocolate taste. After about half, I can taste the general Irish ale taste. A slight bitterness lingers at the end, but overall the beer has a great taste.

This is the third Old Chub of the six pack. I drank the first during Firefly and the second I brought to a Fourth of July gathering to share. In any case, the beer has a slight bitterness, perhaps because I haven't drank beer in a while. Another possibility is the beer's taste might have changed due to the can being subjected to several temperature changes.

Looking to finish all the beer I have in Maryland so that I don't have to carry any of it home, I open my last can of Old Chub. While the beer is over a year old, I think it tastes excellent. A little strong around the edges, I mostly detect a sweet malty, chocolate notes and hardly any bitterness.

Scottish Style Ale (8% ALC.)

This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (8% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub features a skim-milk mouthfeel, semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a kiss of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

While Dale’s satisfies our hop addiction, Old Chub takes care of our deep affections for malt. The cola-colored beer (almost black) features a tan head, a creamy, skim-milk mouthfeel, and rich, semi-sweet flavors of caramel and chocolate throughout. The addition of smoked grains gives Old Chub a delicate kiss of smoke on the finish.

Old Chub is the beer equivalent of a lightly smoked single malt scotch, or your favorite dark chocolate. We call it Rocky Mountain Mutha’s Milk. People who tell us defiantly, “I don’t drink dark beer,” often fall deeply in love with Old Chub. We can’t blame them.

Here are a few glowing reviews from Beeradvocate.com and Ratebeer.com beer nuts who’ve flipped for Old Chub:

I guess I didn’t expect much from a beer in a can. But, wow– when you crack it open, you immediately get a whiff of that peaty, smoky aroma characteristic of good scottish ales.

Lots of caramel, a bit of chocolate, roasted malts, smoke…and a nice creamy mouthfeel. Beer this good shouldn’t come from a can. I like it.

…some smokey and sweet chocolate aromas. Flavor was smokey (light peat?) sweet chocolate malts with molasses and brown sugar in the mix. Body was heavy-moderate with light to medium carbonation. Yum.

Very full initial taste of caramel, toffee and chocolate. Slightly smokey followup. Very smooth, silky, almost luxurious mouthfeel. Summary: A hugely rich, full, hearty–& above all TASTY beer. DO NOT be put off by the can. Most excellent.
