Bishop Guava Ginger

~I'm a cider.~

20180822:
My second drink at Bishop Cidercade was the Guava Ginger didn't have much of a ginger taste. With that being said, it tasted good. I liked it. It was sweeter than the combination of Bishop Very Cherry and Bishop Checkmate I had earlier. 11:25 PM CT

Round 1: 66 vs. 39. Yay!
Round 2: 54 vs. 66. Oh no!

We thought the "Guava" was really good, and it is, but then again, we never rest on our laurels [whatever they are], so the cider masters added a bit of ginger. This adds a slight amount of heat and a clean finish to this cider.

20180822:
I came to Bishop Cidercade today and I started off with a fifty-fifty blend of Bishop Very Cherry and Bishop Checkmate. 10:16 PM CT

An even mix of Bishop Very Cherry and Bishop Checkmate

The employee/bartender gave me a sample of the Very Cherry mixed with the Checkmate, and said the Checkmate was very sweet on its own. I had enjoyed the sample mix and, instead of trying either ciders individually, I just went ahead and got cup of the two ciders mixed. 10:16 PM CT

The drink was so good. 11:22 PM CT

Afterwards I had a Bishop Guava Ginger.

BarrelHouse Mango IPA

20180811:
The beer has fruity smell out of the bottle. It has a hazy yellow color with suspended sediments. The head stays around.

BarrelHouse Mango IPA - bottle, bottlecap, half-full glass

Sip #1. The beer is refreshing, juicy, and has a mild carbonation. It finishes with some bitterness, like a grapefruit but less bitter.

Sip #2. I can't detect any mango flavor, but the beer has a sweetness.

Sip #3. I like the mild carbonation. It's just enough to give the beer a sensation, but eases off in an appreciation for the flavor. Unfortunately, my hands had a strong fragrance left from some hand soap and sometimes I smell the hand soap instead of the beer.

BarrelHouse Mango IPA - glass with lacing

Smelling the beer, it's grassy and indicative of it being an IPA. 12:06 AM PT

Sip #4. The beer is not bitter anymore. It has a lovely taste. Actually, there is some subtle bitterness in the aftertaste. This beer is very light on the palate; there is no stickiness on the tongue. My current nasal congestion is about a BM, earlier at the 2nd or 3rd sip it was between a BM and BE. 12:10 AM PT

Sip #5. Sip #6 (and Last; I took a bigger gulp because it was the last sip). Overall, I enjoyed this beer. It was excellent on multiple levels. It was not too strong while still being flavorful. I rate it 4.6 out of 5 stars. 12:28 AM PT

Anchor Brewers' Pale Ale

20180806:
The beer exhibited a lemon smell while I poured the beer. It had a fruity smell. The beer had a hazy yellow-orange appearance. It was easy to drink, had a citrus taste with a bitter and hoppy aftertaste.

Anchor Brewers' Pale Ale - full bottle

The bitter aftertaste was strong. As such, the beer was refreshing on the sip, but had an unfortunate bitter aftertaste. 10:50 PM PT

The difference in taste (from tasty to bitter) was substantial. 10:51 PM PT

Eventually, the bitterness was gone and there was a delightful sweetness. 10:56 PM PT

Sleepy, I finished the second half of the beer in one gulp. Overall, the final taste was more mellow than before, yet like before, it tasted sweet, then bitter, and then sweet again. 11:40 PM PT

BREWERS' PALE ALE

"Brewers' Pale Ale is an aromatically complex, double dry-hopped American Pale Ale."

Brewers’ Pale Ale is an evolving hop series, yet it remains a crisp and quaffable American Pale Ale packed with hop aroma and flavor.

Anchor’s Brewmaster, Scott Ungermann, asked our brewers “what beer would you like to drink right now?” and they told him “a killer, everyday pale ale that’s aromatic, crisp, refreshing and flavorful”. And then, they set off to make it.

Our brewers work together to develop and constantly evolve recipes until they’re absolutely delicious and uniquely Anchor. For this beer, their first step was to find just the right malt bill to showcase their favorite hops and then blend those hops within that framework. While it took many iterations and taste tests, our brewers were up for the challenge! The result? A modern American Pale Ale with the fresh aromatics of an ever-changing blend of our brewers’ favorite hops for a bright, crisp, delicious and perfect go-to beer.

Anchor Brewers' Pale Ale - left side of front label

The Citra Hop Blend of Brewers’ Pale Ale is a refreshing, easy-drinking pale ale with bright aromatics of tangerine, Meyer lemon and melons. While the first version of Brewers’ Pale Ale highlighted the unique Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand, the Citra Hop Blend possesses a more citrus-forward flavor profile with notes of pine in the background. Anchor’s team of brewers will continue to experiment with their favorite hop varieties in the Brewers’ Pale Ale series, releasing new hop blends periodically. The malt bill, alcohol, bitterness and brewing process stay consistent, but each new blend has unique flavors and aromatics.

Brewers’ Pale Ale is a tasty, aromatic beer packed with complex hop flavor. The Citra Hop Blend pours a bright golden straw color with a creamy white head and nice lacing. Not filtered to intense clarity, it has an intentional slight haziness. It finishes fairly dry with a nice balanced drinkability, making it a beer to enjoy any time of the day.

"The Nelson Hop Blend has a bright, citrus-peel and fresh-hop aroma, balanced with a slightly sweet finish."

Brewers’ Pale Ale, isn’t just another beer—it’s a beer that’s brewed by brewers, for brewers. And now, we’re proud to share it with our beer community. Cheers!

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock

20180804:
The beer had a pitch black color and coffee and malty smell. There was only a little head. The beer had a good smell.

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock - front label

I like the flavor. There's a coffee taste, and the taste is not sharp. It's more mellow with some bitterness. 3:17 PM PT

Finishing this beer, it's sugary. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed drinking this beer. I like the sugary coating that's left on the tongue.

My nasal congestion is medium difficulty to forcibly breathe through the nose ("BM"). 4:28 PM PT

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock
Rich, classic Bavarian specialty lager often consumed as a celebration beer.

The History of Celebrator Doppelbock
Doppelbocks ("double bocks") were probably first brewed in the 17th century by monks in Bavaria - a stronger version of bock beers that originated in Einbeck, Germany. Doppelbocks are usually rich, malty lagers; usually dark-colored; the names often end with the suffix "-ator." Ayinger Celebrator is probably little changed from the doppelbock first brewed at Ayinger in 1878; Ayinger's doppelbock was once called "Fortunator" but this global classic is called "Celebrator" around the world now.

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock - glass and bottle

Taste
A rich, dark elixir with cascading layers of malt complexity balanced by elegant hops. Notes of toffee, caramel, graceful dark-malt roastiness, and the essence of barley. Lager fermentation leads to clean flavors and pinpoint conditioning. Semi-dry finish.

Serving Suggestion
Pastries and desserts, roast goose, cured ham, smoked duck, wild turkey, filet with Dijon sauce, chanterelles, Tournedos Rossini, Châteaubriand. Enjoy with a fine cigar after dinner. Serve in stemmed tumbler at 50 °F.

North Coast Red Seal Ale

20180730:
I was testing out a new way of recording beer notes via Google Forms, but the procedure had a vulnerability: notes can easily be lost via a page refresh or hitting back. In fact, I lost some progress this way. I will return to my old method of sending myself an email via text.* In any case, the form reads as follows:
Appearance: Orange-Yellow, Clear
Smell: Sweet, Malty
Taste: Bitterness, not so sweet. More bitterness. Hmm.

North Coast Red Sea Ale - bottle, bottle cap, full glass

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation.
Overall: My first impression (after the first four ounces) is that I don't like this beer.
Overall Rating: 2
11:25:19 PM PT

Going back to notes via text message, I noted that my nasal passages were good; I was able to forcibly breathe through my nose with ease ("BE"). 11:30 PM PT

I eventually finished the beer, but there wasn't any taste or flavor worth noting. My nasal breathing was somewhere between being able to forcibly breathe through my nose with medium difficulty and hard difficulty ("BM" and "BH"). 20180731 2:42 AM PT

*The Google Forms method ensures I hit the various bullet points (Appearance, Smell, Taste, Mouthfeel), while the texting method will save a draft, the submitted note exists in two places (phone and email), and can help provide timestamps.

1800 Añejo

~1800 Añejo is an aged tequila.~

20180706:
I was at a birthday part and had the opportunity to have a several shots of tequila. In total I had five, which I considered to be a lot in the span of time they were consumed,* but I was happy to take them for the sake of socializing with family (in-laws). Plus, the tequila tasted great. 7:15 PM PT

tequila shot and bottle of 1800 Anejo
1800 Anejo - front

By the Shot:
1. Warm taste.
2. It has a nice smell. I remember this one time I smelled some cheap tequilla and it was painfully harsh on my nose. The taste was like the first shot: warm, sweet, smooth. In particular, there's no burning sensation in the throat.
3. no notes
4. Haha. My uncle-in-law doesn't wait for my cousin-in-law and I to toast, he says "I don't like to toast." In any case, it was warm. It was sweet. It was smooth. [Similar to my description of the second shot] 7:15 PM PT
5. One more. I probably could have had more if it weren't for the peanut I accidentally ate (prior to drinking). 8:17 PM PT

*Each shot is roughly the equivalent of one beer (0.57 ounces of alcohol). I had the four shots in under an hour. Normally, a better, slower pace would be at most two drinks an hour, at most six drinks in twenty-four hours. I can exceed these estimates, but I would begin to risk feeling sick and/or vomiting.

20180630:
I bought several beers from Whole Foods Market and they are all local beers (Northern California: Chico, Fort Bragg, Paso Robles, Sonoma County, San Francisco, and San Carlos). Out of the six, I decided to first have the Summerfest.

By the sip:
0. My nasal congestion is a 1 on a scale of 0 to 8. The beer had a wheat smell.
1. It was refreshing and crisp.
2. I like it so far. 9:04 PM PT
?. I'm feeling sleepy, but my nasal congestion seems to be the same. My sleepiness could just be from working out, I felt sleepy since midnight. Finishing the beer, it was warm and no longer carbonated. It had a mellow flavor to it. 20180701 12:30 AM PT

It's hoppier than most other IPAs.* I enjoy it, but this genre of beer is not my favorite.**

There's a subtle bitterness in the aftertaste. However, the apparent lack of bitterness could just be from my familiarity with beer. 3:03 PM PT

Upon finishing the beer I rated it 3.9 out of 5 stars. 3:59 PM PT

*I'm confused about my notes. First, they indicated that, prior to this sentence, I didn't know the beer's style. It then seems as if I was able to determine that the beer, perhaps via Google, is an IPA. However, the beer is an American pale ale.

Fulton War and Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout conditioned with whole bean PEACE COFFEE in the fermentation tank. It's an epic work of beer, but unlike the novel, this beer is brief and fleeting, appearing just once a year in Winter. While at the airport I went to The Silver Bullet Sports Bar and I started off with a taster of this beer. Satisfied with the taster, I went ahead and got a pint of it.

New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA - full glass

It had a sweet smell. The strength of the beer was approximately medium and it had an orange flavor. As the bartender said, the beer is a little sweet. After my third or fourth sip, I considered this beer to be one of the best IPAs I've ever had. It reminded me of the sweet shandies which I have previously tried, except more hoppy with just enough sweetness. 7:54 PM PT

When my food arrived, I decided to finish the beer first, otherwise the flavor of the food would have potentially ruined the flavor of the beer. In any case, the beer was a perfect balance between hoppy and sweet. It had so much flavor, yet every ounce of it was enjoyable.

On a related note, there was no discernible bitterness. 8:09 PM PT

Calicraft Buzzerkeley

20180612:
This beer had sediments in it. It had an apple smell. It had a strange taste. I wondered if it was the carrot juice I had drank earlier.

glass of Calicraft Buzzerkeley with Bottle and Bottlecap

It had a bitter aftertaste. I didn't enjoy the taste; it might have been a wheat taste. 8:44 PM PT

I dumped what remained of the beer at 12:53 AM. I estimate having dumped a total of half the bottle (approximately 12 ounces). I just didn't enjoy it.

On a different note, the recommend glass for the drink is a flute. 20180613 12:58 AM PT

Calicraft Buzzerkeley - Top of Bottle

STYLE: Sparkling Ale

YEAST: House Champagne Yeast

Buzzerkeley blurs the line between beer and wine. In the free spirit of Berkeley, it's a whole new category we call Sparkling Ale. Champagne yeast and California star thistle honey create an ale that's subtly tart and dry with hints of plum and spice. It's our limit-pushing tribute to the cover beer-crafting that began in Blaine's UC Berkeley dorm room and nearly got him kicked out.

DRINK UP: at celebrations or just for the heck of it.

PAIR WITH: tapas, dessert. intellectual conversation.

Melvin Scenario

20180606:
The beer has a subtle smell. There's a subtle scent of alcohol.

The head was deliciously creamy. I love the taste of it.

Melvin Scenario - glass full

Unfortunately, the sour taste of the two (sour) beers (Grimm Amarillo Pop! and Phantom Carriage Broadacres) I had consumed prior to this beer affected the taste. I attempted to wash the sour flavor out.

This beer had a lingering bitterness. 1:52 PM PT

I later noted that the beer was medium-bodied; the menu description also indicates the beer has a medium body.

Speaking of the menu description, the beer is written to have a "taste of chocolate" and a "hint of roasted licorice." However, I did not detect either.

Melvin Scenario - glass half full

Overall, this beer was good despite not differentiating itself apart in any particular way. Of course, the quality and taste of a beer is sometimes obscured by being the third beer of the night.

As it stands, I decided to rate it 4.1 out of 5 stars. 2:17 PM PT

Phantom Carriage Broadacres

20180606:
Today at Big Rec, I meant to order the Phantom Carriage Cognac Curse and instead I ordered the Phantom Carriage Orange Vanilla Creamsicle Broadacres.*

Anyways, it had a strange smell.

Phantom Carriage Broadacres - full glass

The taste was dominantly orange with a sour taste.

Upon looking at the description, the sour taste made sense, because it's a sour / Berliner Weisse.

On a related note, my previous beer, the Grimm Amarillo Pop!, was also a Berliner Weisse. However, this beer has a stronger sour taste than the previous. In fact, it's much strong and borders on being too strong. I wouldn't always like it this sour.

Phantom Carriage Broadacres - half full glass

Overall, I would rate it 3.9 out of 5.

*From what I can tell, it's a variation of Phantom Carriage Broadacres and I decided to list the variation under Phantom Carriage Broadacres.

Alvarado Street Kettle Cooler

20180606:
I tried this beer and it did in fact taste like Cactus Cooler, but I didn't want to drink a full glass of it and so I chose another beer.

I meant to choose the Phantom Carriage Cognac Curse, instead I chose the Phantom Carriage Orange Vanilla Creamsicle Broadacres. 1:36 PM PT

Grimm Amarillo Pop!

20180606:
I ordered the nine-ounce pour. The beer had a sour smell. It has a mild sour taste.

It was enjoyable, but it was not the best sour I've ever had.

Grimm Amarillo Pop! - full 9 oz pour (the flash and angle alters the color)

In any case, the nine ounces went by fast.

The last sip had the same sour taste as the first sip.

I liked the sourness taste that lingers.

Overall, I rate the beer 4 out of 5 stars. 1:21 PM PT
