About:
Pale gold in color, this ale is big, flavorful and complex. A special Belgian yeast strain adds tropical fruit and spice notes to the crisp dry ale, while Saaz hops add a subtle herbal note.
History:
Tripels originated in the Trappist brewing tradition of Belgium. The term “Tripel” refers to the amount of malt used versus the standard Trappist ’single’. Tripels are akin to the Belgian golden ales in that they are typically gold in color with a dense, creamy head. Their color belies the layers of flavor and complexity and the higher alcohol content of the beer itself. The taste runs from spicy to fruity and sweet from the alcohol.
Brewing:
Samuel Adams New World Tripel is brewed with our blend of Harrington, Metcalfe, and Copeland pale malts and malted wheat. We use Tettnang and Saaz hops in the kettle as well as a touch of brewing sugar. We also dry-hop the beer with Saaz during the aging process to give it a Samuel Adams signature.
At finishing we blend in a small amount of our Samuel Adams Kosmic Mother Funk, a beer with our own yeast creation, to add layers of flavor and character. The Kosmic Mother Funk is a Belgian ale that we age in oak casks and tanks for over six months. While in the oak vessels, the beer undergoes a secondary fermentation with brettanomyces and lacticobacillus yeasts to give the beer a rich tropical fruit note and some sourness.
The blended Samuel Adams New World Tripel is then traditionally bottle conditioned which creates a final fermentation in the bottle, giving the beer an extra smooth and balanced flavor.
