Anchor Porter

20120411:
The beer has a standard porter smell. At least I think. It's been a while since I've had a porter. At least I think. It tastes good. It's relatively more carbonated than other beers. I'd say there's more of a coffee taste to it. Or perhaps a roasted flavor. At first, the aftertaste was strange. But, related to the carbonation, I burped once or twice while drinking the beer and somehow the flavors associated to the burp are more distinct than when drinking the beer. Perhaps the alcohol or bitterness clouds the taste on the way down.

I like Anchor Steam's standard beer and their 2011 Christmas Ale much better. Speaking of which, I still have some bottles of the 2011 Christmas Ale stowed away. With that being said, I did enjoy the Anchor Porter, but because I had higher expectations I thought the beer was just alright.

Paying with credit, I had to buy two bottles of Anchor Porter ($2.49 per bottle) to meet the credit minimum. Though I'm not sure I'll drink the second one. Anybody want to swap a beer with me?

As of 20120523, I had three bottles of the Christmas Ale left. I brought one with me to California and gave two to a good friend of mine who likes wine more than beer. I had given the spare Anchor Porter to my roommate.

ANCHOR PORTER®

Intimidating color. Unexpected taste. Welcome to American Porter.

With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor Porter® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Anchor Porter® became the first modern American porter when it was introduced in 1972. As we celebrate its 40th anniversary, our porter continues to reward those who look beyond its intimidating appearance to discover its smooth, full-bodied drinkability. Anchor Porter® is the definitive American Porter.
